I ping ccc.chaosempire.net and get 217.20.122.220
I reboot (both my router and Win98SE) and can't connect.
I don't know when we should be able to connect; I know it's about midnight over there...
Clues from Chaos please, barring out-dated tables in my ISP's system(s), when should I be able to get back online?

download the bnetgatewayeditor (downloads->realm related files)
change ccc.chaosempire.net to 217.20.113.104
press save to registry!
start game, choose ccc as realm, play
it worked for me

Worked here too.
When started, the editor had the right name (ccc.chaosempire.net) but no IP address. I changed the name to the IP and saved to registry.
Success.
Suggests that I could have done the same with regedit, but... I'm short a few clues.
