the max. sox on a pala helm is 4, not 5...it's not possibile for an item to have more sox than it takes places in the inv...pala helms take 4 places, so the max sox are 4.
and the max sox in non-class specific bodyarmors and shields is 4, so i think that's the maximum for assa/nec armors and sorc-shields, too.

no ch1ll3er that's not right... the sorc shields and class-specific armors can have more sockets than normal armors and shields...

as you said pala helmets can have 4 sockets maximum but the maximum on normal helmets is 3 sox

The max socket number for barb belt are 1 for normal, 2 for exceptional and elite.

For char specific armor the german user list from scoobyD said ([u]new charspecific items[/u])
3 for normal
4 for exceptional
6 for elite

The druid only new weapon (earthshaker?!?) can have the same sockets 3 - 4 - 6

And the assassins throwing stars can have one socket at all.
