The Shield +Flags formula does not work on necro heads (my experience) and I've heard (Drow Elf) it doesn't work on Pally shields either; possible not on Sorc-only shields either.

glad i found this thread - cause i got a question :)

when u say 'rare' - do u mean the 'unique' items?  what color are these 'rare' items? i'v seen white, blue, green, yellow and that brownish-red of uniques.

am i missing something?

i went to battle.net to see if they had anything on 'rare' items, but they dont have a listing for 'rare'.

am a bit confused now :S  pls help me?

For future reference:
Normal, nonmagical item: White
Normal, nonmagical item (etheral and/or socketed): Grey[/b]
Magic item: Blue[/b]
Rare item: Yellow[/b]
Set Item: Green[/b]
Unique Item: Gold[/b]

Then there are tempered and crafted items with their own colors, but once you're busy making those you sure as heck know why they change the color, since you initiated it. ;)

Basically "Rare" items are nothing but magic items with more than just 2 modifiers.

ok - so i didnt really have the colors wrong - just the type - and i'v been playing d2 since it came out way back in the begining :X  just shows u - u never know enough :P

its a pity that the yellow items r the rare ones... they dont really have all the nice stats. i got some very nice unique armors that i'd like to temper - i made a mistake with one unique item - a battle stave. i didnt really understand the socketing and to test i used two gems on the item. i got one socket. i tried two more gems.  thats when i realised that u should do it all at once. :P  i wont make that mistake again i assure u.

thanks!

Well the Rare items can in fact achieve modifiers that make most Unique and Set items look inferior.
The rarity of those so called "Über Rares" is ironically really rare, tho.

In Chaos Empire, the main advantage of Rare items is that you can temper them, as well as put runewords into them.
That can not be done with Set/Unique items.
