Title: What is the 'Hive'?

I was just playing on CCC, and after my sorceress killed a Quill Bear, there was the lightning animation that is used when you open the portal to Tristam, and a portal leading to "No level name" opened.  I entered and it was a bizarre location with the area name "Hive" and it was occupied by character sprites all called "An evil force"...some of whom were champion level, and some of which weren't even D2 sprites (I recognized some as Starcraft icons from the chat listing in normal LOD chat channels).

So....what the heck happened? Is this a real area, some kind of bug or what?

It is a testing level, there is also another one called the crypt, there are some just implemented d1 monsters
