Title: Problem installing CE on Vista machine?
Post by: webwalker on April 23, 2008, 03:13:41 am
I attempt to seduce my brother to "the CE side of The Force".

He has tried several times, but can't successfully install.

His system runs D2-LOD fine.

What can I ask him about his system or tell him to try?

It seems that Vista has some problems with the shortcuts of Diablo2 (when you are using some). So better start it without shortcuts (like -direct etc)

-rightclick onto Diablo.exe and Game.exe to select the compatibilitymode for Windows XP SP2
-start Diablo II as administrator
-if needed deactivate the UAC
-deactivate EAX sound because this is not included in DX10 from Vista or search for a driver which support the emulation of EAX

I hope this will help.

This informations come out of this german thread: http://chaosempire.eu/forum/index.php/topic,16427.0.html

I look forward to needing that information!

Currently, double-clicking on theCE.exe to install it on top of the D2LOD directory is the last step tp complete, activation doesn't work.

Are there issues with service packs or updates to Windows Vista Home and activating CE?

Is D2LOD in the Program Files? This folder is protected by Vista and the Virtual Store. It may be that some files are redirected by the VS and can't be found by the activator.

Btw. <systemdrive>:\Users\<yourusername>\AppData\Local\VirtualStore contains your redirected files.

Hmmm... Would installing the CE mod as Administrator be needed?

Yes, if installing into a protected folder.

Now I knew there were other reasons for not going to Vista, besides the price.
It won't run on my old box.
Ubuntu / Linux runs fine.
Had Ce up and running nice till a boot grub problem. Right now I'm too lazy  to try and fix the grub problem, having too much fun whacking monsters.
If you check on digg.com or on a Howto Ubuntu site, you can find out how to run CE on a duell boot machine and really kick ass. It speeded up the old box.

I found a quite simply way of adding CE to vista. when it says where to add it to the program files, never do its own Chaos Empire section just find the diablo 2 section and add it there. worked simple enough for my moms vista and she loves it. Just make sure you dont try to install it first and add a Chaos Empire section other wise your guna have to uninstall d2 completly and reinstall in your documents for it work.

Brain / webwalker <bdpf> here. Did you check and see if your brother is using any hacks / cheats for D2-LOD? :)

Ya know Old Joe says they mess up ce big  time <snuffy> Here. Try renaming the D2_lod directory to old D2-Lod.

LAst resort, do total remove & reinstall of both D2-LOD & ce. I know that is a pain but it sometimes works. Be sure to save the stash.
Glad to see your still kicking.

You are putting the Ce files in the D2-Lod folder? That s where they should be.

old gummy smiles on ya... Have a drink for me at the Ye Old Tavern. Glass of milk that is. :)
