Title: 7.66 Install Problem
Post by: Namtar on April 02, 2006, 06:00:41 pm
Lol,
Every time I post here I have some strange mysterious problem that needs help ::sigh::

Oh well,
Yesterday night I tried to install 7.66 update on my 7.65 install. Try to activate it, ChaosEmpire.ce missing. Mmm, deinstall CE, d/l full 7.66 reinstall, no go. Deinstall CE and D2, reinstall everything, STILL same problem. Looked at the troubleshooting guide which gives fresh files for 1.11 so I copy those files, re-update to 1.11b, re install CE. And STILL gives me the missing file msg.

I looked at the english forum (not enough time to try to translate german posts) and haven't seen a single comment about ppl having trouble with this installation.

Any ideas ?

Nam

P.S. Error only occurs on activation

Wow, trying random things CAN sometimes work. I tried for the nth time to reinstall 7.66 but without glide wrapper (NO idea what that does) and without the orb mod. It worked without a hitch.

Sorry about that,

Nam

This problem i could only understand if you haven´t like in the troubleshooting is written, not deleted the remaining files in your diablo2 folder with the ending *.org and *.ce.

In your case it seems that you don´t had a missing file but some files too much. ;)

I too had a similiar problem. What i ended up doing was cut and paste those files and yes it did take awhile
As DrowElf said *.org & *.ce removed before install would be less time consuming.

the issue is:

if you install a FULL version, you MUST deactivate BEFORE
if you install UPDATE version, you must have an activated version...

Wait I installed for the first time ever. I activate it fine. I even found and deleted the d2 data FILE, there was no FOLDER, and installed it. But if I try to play the english version: Warning
Location: D2Win\Src\D2Comp\cpp, line #3533
Expression: 0

...comes up 8-9 times (I counted) then this come up once: UNHANDLED EXCEPTION:
ACCESS_VIOLATION(c0000005)

(those could be zeros or o's) then d2 shuts down

I had ZERO errors installing and playing english so do this.  Download the FULL version of 7.65 SP3.

Oh before doing this, if you have errors do a complete reinstall of d2 then install Chaos Empire....

Install and activate SP3.  Then download the patch for 7.66.

As it says in readme folder, install (or copy) the files there into the Diablo II folder.

Override files click YES.

Log in and enjoy.

Service Pack 3?  Forgot what it stood for it should be in the download section.  It was the update for version 7.65.

Actual there is only the fullversion 7.66 for Download.

For your error try to install without the glidewrapper or look in the "Installation FAQ" at my signature. Mostly it depends on a hardware or driver problem.

installation of glide wrapper normally should not break, cause you need to select glide in videotest dialog
probably on a clean instal, d2 autoselects it..this could be an explanation

Blah damnit, I thuoght I had posted a reply to this post O_O

sorry for all the trouble I tried something and it worked. When I was installing the mod I simply removed the Glide thingy (no clue what it does) and the Orb modification. Everything worked fine from then on.

Thanks :D

Assuming you can get D2LOD playing in the 1.07 version you just installed in "SinglePlay" mode at home,
1: get onto Blizzard's b.net and get the 1.11 update so that you're able to play on line on Blizzards b.net.
2: Download the 7.66 full patch (good time to read a book).
3: run the installer
4: Click on the activator, then play D2aLOD_CE7.66 in Single Play at home.

To get onto CE's b.net, you need the next steps...

OK I think everything is straight, but now it seems as if everyname I make up is already being used. Is that common?
Title: Re: 7.66 Install Problem
Post by: Darkkatgirl on April 07, 2006, 07:50:16 am
Yeah its common if you didnt register on the CCC.  You cannot go on regular b.net with CE enabled.

So you can only imagine how I feel about this..lol. Can someone not only tell me what the)*&*&% that means but how do I fix it? I don't hit forums to often so if you have a responce post it here and try ti send me an e-mail just to make sure I get it. My address is soulisick@yahoo.com. Thanks for the help and hope to get back on this mod soon.

ok..thaught it mightbe win 98..
with win xp..i m confused about the issue, did you checked yourmemory for issues?
i suggest running memtest86 over night

the installer needs some memory to extract, probably you have an issue at this point
Title: Re: 7.66 Install Problem

Ok..I downloaded memtest but it needs a bootable disk to run from..I have no 3.5 drive. Does anyone have any other ideas? I ran scandisk and all that. Please give me some help someone.
Title: Re: 7.66 Install Problem

Can you build a bootable CD?  Memtest should work from that.
I dual-boot win98se and linux (RHEL 3.4), and one of the grub entry tables is memtest.

If you can't get a clean-boot of memtest, go the the prime95 site and download the "big prime number hunter".  It's a small package, and included a torture test that runs the numeric algorithm against know results.  This is a good way to determine if you're over-over-clocked.

This is where I should point out that I have the computer IQ of a retarded goldfish....That whole over clocked thing is a term I read about and never get..kinda like girls at this point. So yeah..What does all that stuff you just said mean? I am asking because if I run it and get the info back...chances are I won't be able to do anything with it sence it will look about like that german stuff I got earlier..lol.

OK, that was my best laugh for the day!  Thanks!  (I have retarded goldfish, btw, and a *really* retarded frog!)

You have enough RAM (2GB).
You have enough processor (P4 2.8GHz).
I will presume that the local goldfish have not overclocked your system... so this opens up some unplesant guesses: virus, defective hardware, corrupted download.

For the virus question, TrendMicro has a download HouseCall virus scanner, there may be better but I don't know them (I'm not computer-ignorant, but my goldfish know XP as well as I do, since I'm a Win98SE user).  Please, XP-competent folk, chime in with what virus scanners can do a good check on an XP system.

For the defective hardware question, can you play other games fine?  D2LOD on battle-net?  UnrealTournament? Quake? DoomIII?  Also: try to download http://mersenne.org/gimps/p95v2414.exe and run it as a torture test (that's one of its options). Can your CD write (CD-R or CD-RW) or is it read-only?  Can you make a bootable CD?

You may someday understand computers, but girls will remain strange forever.  Deal with it, that's just how they are.

Ok..I used my McAfee virus scanner..nothing found...I ran the torture test for 7 hours straight and it found no errors...and I can run all other games fine. Right before I DLed the CE mod I was running another LOD MOD that worked fine..I reinstalled Diablo and all...and as far as I can tell all my hardware works fine. So that leaves a bad download...but how can I get all the downloads as bad ones...and for differant site...Any input at this point would be nice..lol. Thanks.

Have a look at:-
Ultimate Boot CD for Windows
http://www.ubcd4win.com/

If I remember correctly this has memory testing utilities

Unfortunately, the Downloads page does not list checksums of any kind so verifying the integrity of the 7.66 or 7.66SP1 download is problematic at this point.
I accept from your test results that the hardware and system are fine.
I guess I'm stumped too...  not even my goldfish has any ideas.

NOTE that all loaders and helper programs that alter the D2LOD files will crash the install.  CE must be installed on a *pristine* D2LOD file set.

Ok...I tried DLing an older version..I think its was 7.55..it gave me the same error. I have asked my dog...cat..all 12 horses we own..2 cows...24 chickens...one bird passing by..and even called a friend in West Texas who put the all knowing Groundhog on the phone...seems they are all stumped. I even resorted to the last prayer of asking my Girlfriend...when she doesn't know whats wrong its bad, cause she knows everything...at least thats what she beats into my head. I am going to try to remove anything that has to do with Dibalo off my comp and reinstall it. If that doesn't work I will just cry, get a bottle of Jack, break out old photos of my EQ Mage and think of the good ole' days....*sigh*....if ANYONE has ANY ideas on this please send me an e-mail. I am sure this will be the last time I look at this post if this fails. Wish me luck and please send any ideas to soulisick@yahoo.com...thanks for all the help guys.
