Title: Can't De-Activate (SmackW32.dll)
Post by: webwalker on April 21, 2011, 01:51:26 pm
As part of my venture to get games working under linux (RHEL 6.0), I tried to run D2LOD-CE under wine.  Attempt failed.  Has anybody gotten D2LOD-CE working with RHEL (any release level)?

One of my attempts was to deactivate CE, copy onto Linux file tree, wine-reactivate, but deactivation doesn't work (complains of SmackW32.dll).

Clues begged piteously....

why not copying a activated version to linux?
if deactivation is not possible you will find org and ce file of same name beside the dll

I got a step forward:
(cd /WinXP/Games/Diablo\ II.CE; wine Diablo\ II.exe )
Allowed me to start up to the point of selecting battlenet, whereupon I cannot select the Chaos Empire battlenet, only East, West, Asia, etc are available.

Home-based characters load.
Changing video resolution to 800x600 back to 640x480 and back again hit an assertion failure.

Ideas what to try?  (I did not re-install anything, this is the same directory that runs fine if I boot WinXP).

Following up to myself: The registry holds the gateways addresses.  Whatever registry you "see" from the Linux/wine side must have the registry keys installed.  Look for, and double-click on the "*.reg" files in the game directory while in wine, to get these keys in wine's registry (wine doesn't use the windows system registry).

 I see your venturing into the Linux territory. I tried a few years ago but lacked time to make it work, the old box was full of cobwebs and dust mites too.

As part of the power supply change out I did clean out the CPU heat sink. The power supply no longer dangles on two screws so the motherboard power connections can reach. :nike:

I do advise that people do this cleaning every year or so. Nothing like keeping the CPU cooler to make it last longer.

This old box is 10 or 11 years old & chugs along fine. Did go through uncounted hard drives & system failures, requiring a number XP Pro installs.

So far the large secondary Hard Drive still running fine! Pound on some wood.

Are you using a Windows version of Wine? It might solve some of the registry issues.

Too bad it is not legal to have the source code to compile for Linux, darn the copyright laws. :)

Bye for now, nappy time.

 :welcome:

I think that would kinda defeat the purpose... ;D
