Title: CE vs Win7
Post by: webwalker on July 20, 2013, 03:15:41 pm
If I deactivate the mod, I can play 1.10 home characters just fine.
If I activate the mod (on a Win7 machine), I don't get far before game.exe quits.
Looking in plugy.log, I see that SmackW32.dll loaded, but the next (d2Common.dll) fails to load.
All these files have the same security settings for all users, and the .exe's are set to run in Winxpsp3 compatibility mode.
No shortcut in use.
I can make a shortcut in the same directory to try -w flag, but no change in behavior results.
This behavior is identical over many tries.

What's a gamer to do?

(my son's win7 laptop "sometimes runs, sometimes on the third try runs".)

my compatibility mode runs on win 98/ME but I have to start it 10 times at once too for one to start up.

*sigh*

Not one time in 10 was there any difference: D2Common.dll can't be loaded.
I don't know if it's dependent on memory size, processor type, or OS updates.

Any guesses what to try?

I had similar problems with XP Pro.

Two things that will help.

1. rename D2 directory to "OLD _____" and get a new download of the Mod, saved in a different directory.  Don't use that directory to install from.

2. Reinstall D2 Lod and the CE mod. I know it takes time and hurts. Pay attention to any error messages and replace the files from the other directory. Ah, you'll have to extract the files but don't install them. Use the compatable mode.

This is a brute force method. Be sure to use the right patch version, 1.10.

If this don't work for you, rename the new D2 directory to "delete D2" and rename, remove "old" from the directory name.

Darn it has been a few years since I had to do this, I hope it has helped you. Remember to rename the D2 directory to "Old D2" so you can return to that installation of D2.

bye

The Trick:
Start->All Programs->Games->Game Explorer which found D2LOD_CE.
I clicked *that*, and the game started like magic.

Since doing that, clicking any shortcut to DiabloII.exe works fine!

Happy Gaming!

Something bad happened, and my shortcuts stopped starting D2LOD/CE.
I repeated the "Start->All Programs->Games->Game Explorer", double-clicked *that* and D2LOD/CE would start.
