CE is only possible to set up as Server with a special Server Version.

This Version is not free accessible.

There are several levels of Server.

What you can easily do is make a LAN connection between two (or more) machines, where each one is able to log into CE and play online, but you'll use the TCP-IP option and join a game hosted on one of these CE-capable machines.  This is also done with Non-CE (regular D2LOD) setups.  If you've done this with D2LOD before installing CE, using your own characters stored on your own hard drives, you can do the same with CE-capable machines.

Would this meet your desires?  If so ask further questions as you run into things needing understanding; if not (your desire is a CE-like server) the answer is a profound No.
