Open Wounds - What does it do?

For example,i have an axe that does 50% chance of open wounds. What happens if i get open wounds?
Is it like poison or somenthing?

OW is much like poison: the creature takes physical damage for some period of time at a rate determined by your level.  The 50% is the chance per hit that this takes place.  More than 100%OW is wasted.

Since the Mod can change much of the game behavior I won't go farther specifying numeric details because I don't know what can be changed, nor what has changed on the basis of what can be changed.

There is an animation on the hit monster of blood spurting out that runs for the fixed length of the OW, this continues even if the monster is killed before the fixed length expires  (so a shattered, evaporated body can continue to spurt blood).
