Is there some sort of guide somewhere that will tell you what all the extra items do, and what do myserious scrolls, mysterious books, and valuable elixirs do?

Phoenix:
There is no special list. If you play on CCC you can ask other players - most of them will help you ;)
mysterious scrolls: cube 10 of them to get a random rune (no other known function at moment)
mysterious book: part of the new cainquest (act1 quest3)
valuable elexier: increases life and mana for e few minutes, have a high sellvalue at gamble-npc's
