Yes you can get scrolls into your books only over taking them of the ground.
To the password problem, these functions are deactivated cause we want to play together. If you want to play alone you can play in singleplayer.
And you need a inhabitant post to play on the Chaos Core Community server, otherwise your gameaccount will not last long.

there's the option to play per TCP/IP or you can play online with your friend, i'm sure if you tell the people who join that you wanna play with your friend the will leave, but in my opinion the best way is to play online and find lots of new friends to play with

I'm basically only playing with my friend in Diablo 2 theese days. Meeting new people can i do in other games. So don't tell me what to do. Besides.. I'm not rude:(
